       Hair extensions: 5 things to know

Hair extensions

Tired of getting up with always that hair that is too short, too fine, without volume? Hair extensions are an easy, practical, and creative way to change your head easily. But before we get started, let's take a look at the 5 things to know about hair extensions.

Hair extensions: what are they?

Hair extensions are strands that will be added to the hair. There are several types. First of all, the most common are extensions made of synthetic material. Here are their main strengths:

Hair extensions

  •  financially, they are very affordable;
  • they do not change shape, even in the rain;
  • they bring a beautiful volume to the hair.

However, they get tangled quite easily, they only last 6 months maximum, and the rendering does not look completely natural.

There are also extensions made of natural material, that is, they are designed with real hair. This gives them many advantages:

  •  in terms of quality, they are far above synthetic extensions;
  •  their maintenance is the same as for your own hair;
  •  the extensions are not perceived as they are discreet;
  •  they can be used for up to 1 year;
  •  they allow any kind of hairstyle, they are perfectly flexible.

On the other hand, of course, their main drawback is that they are much more expensive than synthetic extensions.

Hair extensions: for whom?

In general, hair extensions are mostly intended for those with short hair who are eager to regain long hair. Sometimes the hair grows very slowly, and it can be frustrating: Hair extensions allow you to change your head quickly, so you can do new hairstyles with long hair.

But it can also be useful for those with very fine hair. Hair extensions add volume, without necessarily adding length.

All hair types can benefit from extensions. Regardless of their color, their material, whether they are straight, flexible, or frizzy, there are suitable hair extensions.

Hair extensions: how do they work?

First of all, the hairdresser will perform an analysis of your hair: thickness, quality, color, volume ... Thus, he will be able to determine which extensions are best suited. Then there are several ways to hang them:

  •  with clips: they are the easiest to install, but they fall easily;
  •  hot fusion: the strands are glued with heated keratin to your own hair;
  •  cold fusion: the wicks are glued with cold keratin, or hung with metal rings.

To lay them, the hair is divided into several parts, horizontally. The clips are installed at the roots before pulling the hair down from above to hide it. The same goes for fusion extensions: they are glued to the hairline, having carried out horizontal divisions.

Hair extensions: how is it maintained?

Some sleep with their clip-on extensions, but it is advisable to remove them to keep them in good condition. You should therefore avoid sleeping with extensions, taking a shower, or swimming. They should be washed gently with shampoo about every 6 uses.

Obviously, fusion extensions cannot be taken off on a daily basis, but a scarf around the head for sleeping will allow them to last longer.

For natural hair extensions, you can style them however you want, and even color them. On the other hand, for synthetic extensions, all heating devices such as straighteners or curling irons are to be avoided.

Do extensions damage the hair?

If the hair extensions are of good quality and applied correctly, the hair does not get damaged. But it also depends on the glue used for the fusion extensions and the nature of your hair. If they are naturally brittle, they may be sensitive to hot fusion.

Extensions should not be overused either: after removing them, it is better to leave your hair alone for 1 to 3 months before starting again.
